What Is Reverse Meal Planing? 5 Tips

Meal planning is simply a way for you to plan out what you are going to eat ahead of time to avoid stress.  It's a way to have control over the chaos.

Regular meal planning is sitting down and coming up with meal ideas for dinner (or meal) for the week.  Then make a list of all the ingredients you need for said meals.

Reverse meal planning is a little different than regular meal planning.  It's meal planning with the stuff you already have on hand and then filling in the blanks. Here are 5 tips:

Check pantry, freezer, refrigerators, cupboards, and cellar stockpiles.  Come up with a list of all meats, fruits, veggies, and dry goods.

INVENTORY

Look at your list and create meal plans from what you already have.  We all have more food than we could eat.  Let's use it up.

MEAL PLAN FROM INVENTORY

Now add to your meal plan what you want to cook for the days where you need a meal.

FILL IN THE BLANKS

After you have come up with your meal plan, make your list.  Don't forget to add the items you know you are out of and anything else you might need for the grocery cycle.

CREATE YOUR LIST

Every morning, check your meal plan and take the meat out of the freezer.   It stinks to find you forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer and then order pizza.
